How is a Turkey Pot Call different from a Turkey Box Call

Though it sounds one and the same, there are actually very significant differences between a turkey box call and a turkey pot call.

What is a Turkey Pot Call again?

A pot call is a smaller, roughly palm-sized circular wooden box. This type of turkey call has two parts to it – a pot and a striker. This type of call is used for finesse and is helpful for calling a turkey in the last 10 yards or so. These types of turkey calls can be created using slate, glass, copper or crystal. Each surface creates a little different sound, and hunters often have a specific preference on the sound.

WHAT IS A TURKEY BOX CALL EXACTLY?

A box call is a large rectangular, wooden box. This turkey call is typically made with the same type of wood throughout the call and creates a louder noise to call a turkey in. This noise can travel a greater distance, which is helpful for calling a turkey from farther away. If you’ve ever been 100 yards away from a big gobbler on a windy day, you understand the struggle of calling him in before your strategic moves even come into play.

How the two Turkey Calls are Similar

Both calls require special attention prior to use. A box call typically requires chalk to create the ideal friction for calling a turkey in. A pot call typically requires sandpaper to rough the surface where the striker hits. The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) encourages hunters to learn the basic sounds like cluck, purr, putt and yelp, to start. As your ability increases, you can add the more advanced sounds and learn to create dynamics within those sounds to keep the birds listening.” Both of these turkey calls have the ability to produce a number of sounds that will attract turkeys. As you become a more experienced hunter, you’ll learn the different sounds and pitches the turkeys make.

Both types of turkey calls can be made with wood, plastic or metals. Each of these serve different purposes. Each wood produces unique pitches that imitate different sounds turkeys make. The disadvantage to having a wooden turkey call is that moisture and rain can get inside the call over time. Plastic is useful for the natural elements, but the sounds are less unique to the call. Turkeys can sometimes learn to understand the difference between plastic calls and wooden calls.
